The Arab Planning Institute (API) organized a Training Program on "Investment and value chains for Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs)" for the benefit of the General Authority for the development of small and medium enterprises in the Sultanate of Oman during the period from 05/22/2016 to 24/05/2016. The objective of the training program was to clarify how investment maps of various economic sectors are being developed, and they could be used by decision makers as a tool for investment promotion and for directing investment towards targeted sectors. The program analyzed in depth concepts related to investment maps, their types and methodologies used and different stages of maps development. These stages starts from assessment of the current situation of the economy, the exploration of the strengths of the economy to determine pivotal sectors, and at the end preparation of a full list of the most promising investment opportunities and the elements of their success. The program also aimed at showing how the concept of competitiveness and industrial clusters and value chains can be used to pin point opportunities. On the other hand, the program provided trainees with the necessary skills needed to prepare investment maps and how to identify elements of their success. The program provided practical applications and case studies that help to consolidate the acquisition of knowledge and skills needed for preparing an investment map.
