Arab Planning Institute (API) participated in the workshop on “Arab
Development and the Future Arab Indicators” organized by Environmental Center
for Arab Towns, Dubai, 21-23 September, 2014. API was represented by Prof. Ahmed
Al Kawaz, Senior Economic Advisor, whose contribution was a presentation
entitled “Sustainable Development and Environment”.
The API’s contribution reflects a
number of issues. First, a clarification of the sustainable development is made
clear, with especial attention to the environmental pillar of such development.
Second, the performance of Arab
Countries (ACs) in the field of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has been
enlightened. Third, The presentation focuses on the concept of Econlogical or
Environmental Footprint, with references to the case of ACs. Fourth, the state of the art of Arab urban
was elaborated. Fifth, the relationship between Environment and Arab Economic
development was tackled through a sample of indicators, such as Global Cities
Index, Arab Countries and Knowledge based economies. The presentation was ended
by mentioning the main problems facing Arab cities as far as the sustainable
development is concerned.
