The paper investigates thefeasibility of achieving the Millennium Development Goal of reducing poverty byhalf by the year 2015 in the context of Sudan. An analytical framework forthe changes in poverty over time is presented. The framework allows an indirectmethod for the calculation of the relevant variables to be used for countriesthat do not have the required information. The indirect method is used for Sudan. Startingfrom 2001 as a base year it is shown that Sudan needs to attain, and sustain,a GDP growth rate of about 7 percent per annum to achieve the MDG on poverty.Alternatively, it is shown that it will take Sudan, growing at a per capita GDPrate of 2.2 per cent per annum (equivalent to a GDP growth rate of about 5 percent per annum) about
28 years to achieve the MDG on poverty. On both counts the results show theinfeasibility of achieving the MDG on poverty and suggest that the formulationof the time horizon for the MDG on poverty should be left free to be determinedby country circumstances.
